Radio Sailing

1980749 orig

Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club has a flourishing radio sailing section that organises racing every Sunday morning starting at 10.30.

We are a friendly bunch who enjoy the challenge of racing these little boats. Total concentration is required but it's also huge fun. We take it seriously, but not too seriously: generally speaking the soundtrack is friendly banter between competitors, occasionally punctuated by stronger words when boats collide.

The boats we race are principally the DF65 (as in the photo) and the DF95. They are both one-design classes. Designed in the UK and mass-produced in China. Consequently they sail well and are very affordable. Furthermore, because they are all identical, there really is not a lot more that you can spend to make them go faster. Success depends on skill and judgement.

Some of our members come from a sailboat racing background. But some don't. It's not essential. In fact whilst success in big boat racing will give you a head start with these little boats the adjustments and tuning required demands a considerable level of understanding: many people say that what they have learned from racing their DF65s makes them better big boat sailors. The principles are the same.

We welcome members of all ages and backgrounds. If you would like to find out more please contact Richard Gooderick or pop down the club on a Sunday morning at 10.30.
